INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD (ISO)

What is ISO?

The International Science Olympiad (ISO) is a global competition designed for students aged 6 to 19. designed to assess their scientific thinking through both theoretical and practical problem-solving.

•  Encourages innovation and discovery

Since its inception in 2016, the Science Olympiad has welcomed over 192,000 participants from more than 15 countries. Caya Academy is proud to serve as the official coordinator for Malaysia, bringing this esteemed international platform to young science enthusiasts nationwide.

The Olympiad consists of two stages: the Preliminary Round and the Final Round. For Malaysian participants, the Preliminary Round will take place on 20 June 2026.

Participants can take the test anytime between 10:00am to 7:00pm.

Mode:
(1) Online (auto-proctored)
(2) Paper-based at your school (if your school is hosting)

ISO 2026 Regulations

The competition consists of 2 stages:
• Preliminary Round
• Final Round

(1) PRELIMINARY ROUND

We offer 2 options for participants:

Option 1: Online at Home
Date: 20 June 2026
Timeslot: 10:00am to 7:00pm (candidate may take the test anytime between the stated timing)
• Candidates can take the test online from the comfort of their home.
• A laptop or tablet with a webcam and mic, a stable internet connection, and a quiet room are required.
• The exam is AI-proctored.
• This mode will be managed by the ISO team.

Option 2: At School (Paper-Based or Online)
This option is only available if the candidate's school is conducting the test.
Date: 17, 18, 19, 20 or 21 June 2026
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
• Candidates can take the test at their school or tuition center.
• The test can be either paper-based or online.
• Teachers at the school or center will manage the exam.
• The date and mode can be anytime between 17 to 21 June 2026, with the decision to be made by teachers.

(2) FINAL ROUND

Date: Last week of July (date to be announced). 
Mode: Online at home

Primary 3: Newton 1
Primary 4: Newton 2
Primary 5: Darwin 1
Primary 6: Darwin 2
Secondary 1: Faraday 1
Secondary 2: Faraday 2
Secondary 3: Edison 1
Secondary 4: Edison 2
Secondary 5: Franklin 1
Secondary 6: Franklin 2

Important Notes:
• Einstein -1 and Einstein -2 students will take the same test paper but will be ranked separately. Same applies for Newton -1 & 2; Darwin-1 & 2; Faraday - 1&2; Edison -1 & 2 and Franklin-1 & 2.

• Candidates from lower levels may compete at a higher level if they feel adequately prepared for that level. 

• The International Olympiad Academy (IOA) reserves the right to verify the school's curriculum, language of instruction, and the hours dedicated to English education.

• IOA reserves the right to disqualify those who do not comply with the regulations.

• Gold medals will be awarded to the top 5% of competitors.
• Silver medals will be awarded to the next top 10% of competitors.
• Bronze medals will be awarded to the next top 10% of competitors.
• All medalists will be presented with merit certificates.
• Others will receive a participation or appreciation certificate.
• E-certificate will be given for appreciation and participation.
• Students securing 95% & above in the first round, will participate in final round.
• Students who score higher than 95% in the final round will receive a Perfect Scorer Award, a Gold Medal, and $100 in cash.

• The exam duration is 90 minutes.
• The exam consists of all multiple-choice questions. 
• The first-round perfect scorer will appear in the Final round of competition.
• Einstein -1 and Einstein -2 students will take the same test paper but will be ranked separately. Same applies for Newton -1 & 2; Darwin-1 & 2; Faraday - 1&2; Edison -1 & 2 and Franklin-1 & 2.
• There are three levels of increasing difficulty in each of the three sections.
• One mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer; there will be no penalty for skipping a question.

EINSTEIN & NEWTON (Primary 1 to 4)
•  Section-A (Easy): 8 questions | 3 marks each
• Section-B (Medium): 8 questions | 4 marks each
• Section-C (Hard): 8 questions | 5 marks each
Grand Total: 24 questions | 96 marks

DARWIN, FARADAY, EDISON & FRANKLIN (Primary 5 to Secondary 6)
Section-A (Easy): 10 questions | 3 marks each
Section-B (Medium): 10 questions | 4 marks each
Section-C (Hard): 10 questions | 5 marks each
Grand Total: 30 questions | 120 marks

• During the exam, pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, and other geometrical instruments are allowed.
• Instruments or gadgets like calculators, smart watches, etc. are strictly prohibited.

For paper-based examinations, the test answers are marked by an OMR device and for that reason need to be properly filled in. Candidates are required to use an HB pencil or a blue/black ball point pen while completing the OMR form.

In case an OMR form is not properly filled in (e.g., incorrect or missing roll number) or scanned and the OMR device cannot read it, ISO keeps the right to disqualify the candidate if the identity of the candidate cannot be established.

For online examinations, in case of suspected malpractice, ISO keeps the right to re-test the candidates using a parallel test and under the invigilation of the ISO staff.

The first-round perfect scorer will appear in the Final round of competition.

Refunds will only be considered if the registered candidate is medically unfit to participate on the competition dates and during any available replacement sessions. A valid medical certificate must be provided to request a refund.
